Descripción :	This article aims to draw a comparison between the two first novels of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, The sorrows of young Werther and Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship, in the interest to see the way in which these two novels interpreted fundamental questions of the arising modernity, especially with the political rise of the bourgeoisie. These questions are related with the conflicts between individual and society, to thebarriersimposed by the social reality against the aspirations of the personality. Both novels are revealing, at the same time, of Goethe’s biographical trajectory and the historical conflicts he faced. It is possible to espy between the first and the second novel an apprenticeship that reveals the hard process of personal self-cultivation in the shock against the social reality. O intuito desse artigo é tecer uma comparação entre os dois primeiros romances de Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Os sofrimentos do jovem Werther e Os anos de aprendizado de Wilhelm Meister, para ver de que modo essas obras interpretam questões fundamentais da modernidade que emergia com a ascensão política da burguesia. Tais questões dizem respeito sobretudo aos conflitos entre indivíduo e sociedade, às barreiras impostas pela realidade social às aspirações da personalidade. Ambos os romances são reveladores, ao mesmo tempo, tanto do percurso biográfico do seu autor quanto dos conflitos históricos com os quais ele se defrontou. É possível divisar, entre o primeiro e o segundo romance, um aprendizado que registra o difícil processo de formação da personalidade no embate com a realidade social.
