Descripción :	The landscape unfolds indefinitely in the novel Batouala and invites us to think or rethink about the human being, the complexity of his relationship with the surrounding world. Placed in a pictorial or scriptural perspective, Rene Maran offers us geographical and physical boundaries, standardized landmarks and at the same time adopts a plurality of codes and signs inherent in a way of life specific to the African society. A story is woven, a mesh between nature and man. Landscape semiology highlights identity criteria that focus on Batouala, the “guardian of obsolete mores”, “faithful to the traditions that his ancestors had bequeathed to him” or on the social and cultural oppression of indigenous populations. Rene Maran’s narrative art recreates a whole world to the point we feel close to it. Le paysage se déploie indéfiniment dans le roman Batouala et nous invite à penser ou à repenser à l’être humain, à la complexité de ses rapports avec le monde environnant. Placé dans une perspective picturale ou scripturale, René Maran nous propose des délimitations géographiques et physiques, des repères normés et adopte parallèlement une pluralité de codes et de signes inhérents à un mode de vie propre à la société africaine. Une histoire se tisse, un maillage entre la nature et l’homme. La sémiologie paysagère met en lumière des critères identitaires qui se polarisent sur Batouala, le « gardien des moeurs désuètes », « fidèle aux traditions que ses ancêtres lui avaient léguées » ou sur l’oppression sociale et culturelle des populations autochtones. L’art narratif de René Maran restitue tout un monde, jusqu’à nous en faire sentir proches.
