| dc.description | In this article, we contemplate myth as a system of language and thought attached to poetic forms in order to examine the mythical rewriting in La Fin de Satan (1886), by Victor Hugo. Considering the revival of myth in modernity, especially in romantic literature, we notice Hugo’s idea of rewriting myths – like the coming of the Messiah, the apocalypse that tells the victory of good over evil, and the Promethean legend of the outcast – welding them to revolutionary values like freedom, equality, and the fight against tyranny. The character Satan, from the Judeo-Christian tradition, is represented in the mentioned work as a victim of disproportionate punishment and is compared to Prometheus, the titan of Greek mythology. Hugo establishes the image of the outcast as someone subjected to the injustice of the Creator’s sanction. God’s unreasonable punishment is responsible for the universal evil inasmuch as the fallen archangel feels injured and, looking for redress through revenge, engenders inordinate evil against every creature. This evil will be exterminated the moment Satan is forgiven – forgiveness will compensate him and restore the universal balance. | en-US |
| dc.description | Dans cet article nous contemplons le mythe en tant qu’un système de langage et pensée indissociable de la forme poétique afin d’examiner la réécriture mythique dans La Fin de Satan (1886), de Victor Hugo. Considérant la revivification du mythe dans la modernité, surtout dans la littérature romantique, nous constatons la proposition hugolienne de réécriture des mythes – comme la venue du Messie, l’apocalypse biblique qui raconte la victoire du bien sur le mal, la légende prométhéenne du proscrit – en les assemblant à des valeurs révolutionnaires modernes comme la liberté, l’égalité et le combat contre la tyrannie. Le personnage de Satan, issu de la tradition judéo-chrétienne, est représenté dans l’oeuvre comme la victime d’une punition disproportionnée et comparé à Prométhée, le titan de la mythologie grecque. Hugo présente l’image du proscrit Lucifer en tant que quelqu’un soumis à l’injustice de la sanction du Créateur. Le châtiment excessif imposé par Dieu est le responsable du mal universel dans la mesure où l’archange déchu se sent lésé et, en cherchant sa réparation à travers la vengeance, engendre le mal démesuré contre n’importe quelle créature. Ce mal sera exterminé au moment où Satan sera pardonné : le pardon le réhabilitera et rétablira l’équilibre universel. | fr-FR |
