Descripción :	This article discusses the main results of collective ethnographic fieldwork focusing on the everyday life of the working classes in Roubaix, a de-industrialized city that has been going through demographic and urban decline for several decades. Men living in the poorest neighborhoods have managed to produce activities on the margins of the formal labor market –that has evicted them–, such as outdoor auto repairs. engage A source of income, of qualification and of work for different gene-rations, mechanical services are offered in the street, on parking lots or in the city interstitial spaces. We analyze the regulation of the distribution of positions and status, the porosity between formality and informality. Se exponen algunos resultados de una investigación etnográfica colectiva sobre la organización de la vida cotidiana en Roubaix, ciudad desindustrializada, norte de Francia, con fuerte declive demográfico de varios decenios, donde habitantes de barrios pobres, expulsados de los mercados de trabajo protegidos, han producido actividades al margen del sistema formal de empleo, como la reparación de auto-móviles en la calle, en los aparcamientos, en los espacios intersticiales de la ciudad siendo fuente de ganancias, calificación y trabajo para diferentes generaciones. Analizamos cómo se regula la distribución de puestos de trabajo y de estatus socia-les, las relaciones entre formalidad e informalidad y avanzamos la hipótesis de la inscripción de dicha actividad en una economía popular urbana que se construye sobre una orientación a la subsistencia de las familias de clases populares.Open-air garages: social and spatial configuration  of informal laborThis article discusses the main results of collective ethnographic fieldwork focusing on the everyday life of the working classes in Roubaix, a de-industrialized city that has been going through demographic and urban decline for several decades.
