dc.descriptionThe article explores some of the strategies Martín de León (1611) and Bartholomé de Alva Ixtlilxóchitl (1634) used in their Nahuatl confession manuals in order to understand the Christian contents. Although the previous work of Friar Alonso de Molina (1569) was accessible to the authors, they use their own style and express their concerns about the reception of Christianity among the Nahuatl-speaking population. I will review the development of the linguistic register called “Christian doctrine Nahuatl” in order to document the choices for referring to ‘god’, ‘sin’, ‘devil’, ‘hell’, and other important Christian terms. Then I will assess the aforementioned authors’ confession manuals in order to evaluate the validity of and changes to the previously employed Christian terms.en-US
dc.descriptionEl presente artículo trata de algunas estrategias utilizadas por los autores Martín de León (1611) y Bartholomé de Alva Ixtlilxóchitl (1634), para establecer los contenidos cristianos en sus confesionarios en lengua náhuatl. Dichos autores, aunque contaban con la obra de fray Alonso de Molina (1569) como antecedente, escriben con su estilo y preocupaciones propias respecto a la recepción del cristianismo entre la población nahua-hablante. Se revisa el desarrollo del registro lingüístico llamado ‘náhuatl de doctrina’ durante el siglo xvi y se documentan las opciones para referirse a ‘dios’, ‘pecado’, ‘demonio’, ‘infierno’ y otros vocablos importantes del cristianismo. Luego se revisan los confesionarios de los autores mencionados, observando la vigencia de las primeras soluciones y las novedades.es-ES
