Descripción :	The contrast between internal and external chieftainship has for a long time served to isolate the analysis of indigenous leadership in the classical meaning from those unauthentic forms of leadership imposed by contact with economical, political and religious agents from outside the group. But these external chieftainships are remarkable for their duration, diversity, and tradition, while the balance between internal and external in native sociology has been reconsidered. Leadership forms tied to white society or to the city can no longer be regarded as epiphenomena of the 'contact'; they form the subject of autobiographies of their protagonists, and a central element in the recounting of transformations that their groups have experienced in the recent past. El contraste entre una jefatura interior y exterior ha servido durante mucho tiempo para aislar el análisis del liderazgo indígena propiamente dicho de las formas inauténticas de liderazgo que imponía el contacto con agencias económicas, políticas y religiosas externas al grupo. Pero tales jefaturas externas ya han alcanzado una duración, una diversidad y una tradición dignas de nota, al mismo tiempo que se repensaba el balance entre interior y exterior en la sociología nativa. Liderazgos ligados a los blancos o a la ciudad ya no pueden ser vistos como epifenómenos del 'contacto'; son el tema de autobiografías de sus protagonistas, y elemento central en el relato de las transformaciones experimentadas por sus grupos en la historia reciente.
