| Descripción : | On April 27th, 1859, The Studio Building of New York unveils the feature exhibition of the season: The Heart of the Andes, an oil on canvas painted by Frederic Church, produced after his second trip to South America in 1857. He made sketches and studies in situ, and also wrote, in rudimentary Spanish, a Diary recording his experience. Traveling to South America under the influence of Humboldt seeking inspiration and artistic recognition was vital for Church’s artistic style and career. The exhibition was a success, attracting 12.000 people in three weeks before its grand European touring. In this article I would like to explore the relationship between art, science and nature, and the concept of heroic landscape painting coined by Humboldt, in Church’s New World canvases. El 27 de abril de 1859 se inaugura en The Studio Building of New York la exhibición artística del año: The Heart of the Andes, óleo sobre lienzo pintado por Frederic Church, luego de su segundo viaje a Sudamérica en 1857. Church dibujó bocetos y estudios in situ, y asimismo escribió, en un español rudimentario, un Diario narrando su experiencia. Viajar a Sudamérica bajo la influencia de Humbodt buscando inspiración y reconocimiento artístico resultó vital para el estilo y carrera de Church. La exhibición fue un éxito, vista por 12.000 personas en tres semanas antes de comenzar su gira europea. En este artículo quiero explorar la relación entre arte, ciencia y naturaleza y el concepto de 'pintura paisajística heroica' acuñado por Humboldt, en las pinturas del Nuevo Mundo de Church. |
