In order to understand modern Japanese thought, it is essential to explore the historical moment and, especially, the period of mass assimilation of Western culture, which took place during the Meiji era (1868-1912). From the relationship with the Chinese language, which accompanied Japan since its beginnings, to the intense imports of Western materials, which helped the country in its search for identity, we can recognize strategies that led the archipelago to develop knowledge, always through a translational language. Thus, this article aims to present a brief historiography of translation studies in Japan, identifying the most striking changes that the language has undergone, and culminating in a discussion of power relations in the Japanese socio-cultural scene of the time, which dictated how new words and a new grammar would be used in this new Japan.Para entendermos o pensamento japonês moderno, se torna imprescindível a exploração do momento histórico e, principalmente, do período de assimilações em massa da cultura ocidental, que aconteceu durante a era Meiji (1868-1912). A começar pela relação com a língua chinesa, que acompanha o Japão desde seus primórdios, até as intensas importações de materiais ocidentais, que auxiliaram o país em sua busca por identidade, podemos reconhecer estratégias que levaram o arquipélago a desenvolver conhecimento, sempre por intermédio da linguagem tradutória. Desse modo, o presente artigo tem como objetivo apresentar uma breve historiografia dos estudos da tradução no Japão, identificando as mudanças mais marcantes pelas quais a língua passou e culminando com uma discussão sobre as relações de poder no cenário sociocultural da época, que ditou como novas palavras e uma nova gramática seria utilizada neste novo Japão.
