| dc.description | Resumen Este trabajo discute el problema teórico de las consecuencias no intencionales de la acción política, tal como queda ilustrado por el proceso de independencia venezolano en sus etapas iniciales. El grupo social que concibió el proceso lo hizo impulsado por una mezcla de miedo y ambición. La percepción de que era factible una sublevación de los sectores oprimidos les empujó a ejecutar una revolución política como medida preventiva. La élite quería para sí el poder político, y pensó que podría destruir la autoridad de la Corona española preservando al mismo tiempo la estructura social de la Colonia. No midieron los “mantuanos” el impacto desestabilizador que su proyecto tendría sobre el principio de legitimidad tradicional, que había garantizado el orden por tres siglos. Su deseo de preservar privilegios, y a la vez sustituir el marco institucional que les daba su legitimidad, desató eventual- mente una masiva insurrección popular que estuvo cercana a eliminar por completo a la élite colonial como grupo social.Abstract This article discusses the non-intentional consequences of political action as illustrated by the early stages of the Venezuelan process of independence. The social elite who conceived and executed this process entered it with a mixture of fear and ambition. They perceived that a social revolution was in the making and tried to prevent it with their own political revolution. Also, they wanted political power for themselves and thought they could destroy the authority of the Spanish Crown while maintaining the existing domestic social system. However, they failed to acknowledge the destabilizing impact this move would have on the principle of legitimacy that had traditionally sustained order in the Venezuelan colony. Their attempt to preserve their social privileges, while substituting the institutional framework that gave those privileges legitimacy, opened the doors to a massive popular upheaval that came close to totally wiping out the proud colonial elite as a social group. | es-ES |
