The speeches emitted from the written press, related with the causes of the common crime have been insufficiently approached by the Cuban historiography, and this affirmation becomes more evident in the local plane. In this sense, this article intended to value the structuring of the reflections on the etiology of the common crime in the city of Pinar del Rio, Cuba, in the decade of 1950. This period is characterized by the perception by the local middle class, of the influence of the social and cultural modernization processes in the behavior of the residents. The analysis allowed understanding that the reflections on the crime, spread by the plane press, inculpated to the “modern” lifestyles as causes that impact in the deformation of the families and the society, for what it considered that the education was the main form of diminishing the common crime.Los discursos emitidos por la prensa escrita sobre las causas del crimen común, han sido insuficientemente abordados por la historiografía cubana; carencia que se hace más evidente en el plano local. Por ello, este artículo se propone valorar la construcción de las reflexiones en torno a la etiología de ese tipo de crimen en la ciudad de Pinar del Río, durante la década de 1950. Este período estuvo marcado por la actitud de la burguesía pinareña ante lo que percibían como la influencia de los procesos de modernización social y cultural en el comportamiento de los pobladores. En esa medida, el presente análisis, permitió comprender que las consideraciones sobre el delito, difundidas por la prensa de la localidad, inculpaban a los estilos de vida considerados “modernos”, de causar la deformación familiar y social, por lo cual reclamaban a la educación fungir como la principal forma de disminuir el crimen común.
