Descripción : | Vicente Fox's victory in the 2000 federal elections meant that the PAN could no longer postpone the task of transforming its own institutional life. The process of statutory reform and the changeover in the PAN's national leadership have demonstrated the party's capacity for adaptation, allowing it to maintain control over its internal governance. However, these two events have also placed limits on its ability to respond to a new political reality that derives from having to run a government. Along these lines, the characteristics of party-government relations within the framework of alternation of political parties remain to be redefi ned. PAN members must still resolve when, under what conditions, and through what mechanisms they will defi ne the specifi cs of the so-called "democratic connection" with the Executive branch. This article is an initial refl ection on the PAN's progress and the challenges facing it, within the context of its new responsibilities in running a federal government. Our goal is to identify the specifi c characteristics of the PAN's current crisis and to discuss its real potential for political innovation. |
