Descripción :	A exploração comercial do sisal na Bahia, desde que foi iniciada em fins da década de 1930, ocorreu às margens da legislação trabalhista vigente. A introdução de uma nova máquina no primeiro beneficiamento da planta, em meados da década de 1950, ocasionou a reestruturação da organização do trabalho, mantendo essa atividade reduzida aos campos de sisal. Por meio da análise de entrevistas com trabalhadores rurais e das parcas fontes escritas encontradas, o presente artigo analisa a prática do trabalho nos campos de sisal do município de Valente, nas décadas de 1970 e 1980, focalizando as relações de trabalho, sua estrutura e os riscos dessa atividade, como a mutilação de dedos, mãos e braços, que até a primeira metade dos anos 1980 vitimou pelo menos mil e duzentos trabalhadores. The commercial extraction of the sisal in Bahia, since its beginning at the end of 1930, did not happen in accordance with the labour law at the time. The introduction of a new machine in the first improvement of the plantation, in the middle of the decade of 1950, resulted in the restructuration of the organization of work, maintaining this activity reduced to the field of sisal. Based on the testimony of rural workers and the a few number of written sources found, in this article examines on the practice of work in fields of sisal of the small city of Valente, in the 1970s and 1980s, focusing on work relations, their structure and the risks of this activity, as the mutilation of fingers, hands and arms, that had until the first half of the decade of 1980 maltreated at least one thousand two hundred workers.
