Descripción :	This article discusses the changes in the process of territorial constitution of Amazon region, featuring as main objectives the geographicity of religious missions, the Politics of Pombal government and the symbolic value of spatial forms, the African heritage in Amazon, the rubber economy and the reorganization of the territory from the second half of twentieth century and perspectives for 21st century. We identify that this region was conquered and occupied by the Portuguese between the seventeenth and nineteenth century, when they used various strategies for occupying the territory - fortress, religious missions, the policy of Pombal and after that the rubber economy. In the twentieth century, the strategy of circulation through Amazon rivers gives place to roads, which results in a region marked by socioeconomic and environmental contradictions, as consequences of the historical and territorial model of an excluding development. O presente artigo discute as transformações no processo de formação territorial no estado da região amazônica. Apresentando como objetivos centrais a geograficidade das missões religiosas, a política pombalina e o valor simbólico das formas espaciais, a herança africana na Amazônia, a economia da borracha e as reorganização do território a partir da segunda metade do século XX e as perspectivas para o século XXI. Identificando-se que a região foi conquistada e ocupada pelos portugueses do século XVII a XIX, que se utilizaram de várias estratégias de ocupação do território – as fortalezas, as missões religiosas, a política pombalina, em seguida a economia da borracha. No século XX ocorre a mudança de estratégia de circulação dos rios para as rodovias, que resulta no século XXI, em um espaço regional marcado pelas contradições socioeconômicas e ambientais decorrentes do modelo histórico e espacial de desenvolvimento excludente.
