| dc.description | The heroism of the Army of the East against the invading forces of Napoleon iii during the 62 days that the siege of the city of Puebla lasted (March-May 1863) has been widely documented. However, it is worth asking how and who carried out the tasks of fortifying the city prior to the confrontations? What were the consequences of the fortification? To answer these questions, this article, based on information obtained from the General Municipal Archive of Puebla and the General Archive of Notaries of the State of Puebla, highlights the role that the civilian population played in the construction of the forts for more than six months, as well as in the destruction of some buildings to ensure the defense of the Plaza de Puebla. | dc.description | Resumen: La heroicidad del Ejército de Oriente frente a las fuerzas invasoras de Napoleón III durante los 62 días que duró el sitio a la ciudad de Puebla (marzo-mayo de 1863) ha sido ampliamente difundida. Sin embargo, cabe preguntarse: ¿cómo y quiénes realizaron las tareas de fortificación previas a los enfrentamientos?, ¿cuáles fueron las consecuencias de la fortificación? Para responder a dichos cuestionamientos este artículo destaca el papel que la población civil tuvo en la construcción de los fuertes durante más de seis meses, así como en la destrucción de algunas edificaciones para asegurar la defensa de la plaza de Puebla. El estudio se basa en información obtenida en el Archivo General Municipal de Puebla y en el Archivo General de Notarías del Estado de Puebla.
