| dc.description | they were political and social key figures and promotors of the ideology of progress for the government. Through the construction of large-scale projects, they contributed to Francoist economic success and were responsible for its major social consequences including the suffering of many. Dam constructing engineers where a prestigious elite in the discipline. Beginning form the 1950s, they sought to make Spain a respected partner on an international level again. To archive this aim they re-established contacts from the 1920s and 1930 (those form the colonial past included) and created new ones. Especially contacts to the USA but also to the USSR became central. On an international level engineers were connected through ideas, knowledge, personal contacts and the material they worked with. Dams become political objects in this context. This object enabled engineers to interact on technical-political missions through the iron curtain. Key for international contact and cooperation was engineer’s habitus. Shared values, ways of behaviour and interests created a medium of communication beside political obstacles which included a strong distinction and exclusion in terms of class and gender (race played at least in Spain a minor role). Habitus helped dam building engineers to create importance as a group in various political contexts. In Spain it helped to strengthen the technical, social, political and economic role of dam engineers. Those engineers played a significant part to consolidate the Francoist regime within the country and on an international level. | en-US |
| dc.description | Como expertos técnicos, los ingenieros ocuparon una posición importante en la España franquista. Fueron figuras clave a nivel político y social al promover la ideología del progreso al servicio del Gobierno. Mediante la construcción de obras de gran escala contribuyeron al éxito económico del franquismo y, al mismo tiempo, fueron responsables de sus consecuencias sociales, incluido el sufrimiento de muchas personas. Los ingenieros constructores de altas presas constituyeron una élite en su profesión, que gozaba de gran prestigio internacional. Desde la década de 1950 se esforzaron por hacer que España volviera a ser un socio respetable a nivel internacional. Con este objetivo retomaron los contactos que habían existido en las décadas de 1920 y 1930 (también las del pasado colonial) y establecieron nuevos lazos. Los contactos con sus pares en los EE. UU., pero también con los de la URSS, ocuparon un lugar central. A nivel internacional, a los ingenieros les unían no solo sus contactos personales, sino también sus ideas, conocimientos, saber hacer y el material con el que trabajaron; en este contexto las presas se convirtieron en objetos políticos. Este objeto facilitó a los ingenieros la interacción en las misiones tecnopolíticas a través del Telón de Acero. El habitus de ingeniero fue clave para la fluidez de la cooperación internacional. Los ingenieros compartían valores, intereses, prácticas y reglas de comportamiento que crearon un buen ambiente para la comunicación más allá de los obstáculos políticos. Este habitus incluía un sentido de distinción y prácticas de exclusión basadas en clase y en género (la raza fue un actor de menor peso en España, y en Europa continental en general). Habitus ayudó a los ingenieros constructores de presas a constituirse como un grupo influyente en contextos políticos muy variados. En España reforzó el papel técnico, social y político de los ingenieros constructores de presas, que acabaron desempeñando un papel de peso en la consolidación del régimen franquista a nivel nacional e internacional. | es-ES |
