Título :	The locomotive, the train and the railroad: image and memory of a masculinity narrated in southern Brazil A locomotiva, o trem e o ferroviário: imagem e memória de uma masculinidade narrada no sul do Brasil

Descripción :	This article focuses on the production of masculinity in railway work, from the interpretative approach that privileges temporality, narrated memory, image and imaginary. The research is based on the material produced in a three-year ethnography (2015-2018) between retired railway workers and their families living in the city of Pelotas, southern Brazil. I interpret the narrative identity of a retired engineer, Orlando Chagas, giving vent to the images that constitute this act of "presenting himself": his collection of photographs, a Hollywood action film and the oral narrative itself. The genre, in the machinist's memoirs of work, is attributed to the train and swings from the feminine, "the locomotive" to the masculine, "the train." While "the locomotive" may have different affectionate nicknames, "the train" is always in struggle or duel with the machinist, a struggle in which the victory of man represents the affirmation of professional talent, the masculine condition and the duration of the self, discontinuation of their profession. Este artigo centra-se na produção da masculinidade no trabalho ferroviário, desde o enfoque interpretativo que privilegia a temporalidade, a memória narrada, a imagem e o imaginário. A investigação tem como base o material produzido em uma etnografia realizada durante três anos (2015-2018) entre trabalhadores ferroviários aposentados e suas famílias, residentes na cidade de Pelotas, região sul do Brasil. Interpreto a identidade narrativa de um maquinista aposentado, Orlando Chagas, dando vazão às imagens que constituem esse ato de “apresentar a si mesmo”: seu acervo de fotografias, um filme hollywoodiano de ação e a própria narrativa oral. O gênero, nas memórias de trabalho do maquinista, é atribuído ao trem e oscila entre o feminino, “a locomotiva” para o masculino, “o trem”. Enquanto “a locomotiva” pode possuir diferentes apelidos carinhosos, “o trem” está sempre em luta ou duelo com o maquinista, embate no qual a vitória do homem representa a afirmação do talento profissional, da condição masculina e da duração do si mesmo, frente à descontinuidade da sua profissão
