Descripción :	The article focuses on the urban history of the “vilas” established in Minas Gerais over the seventeenth century. In the first part, it briefly analyses the main factors which conditioned the emergence in the region of the first settlements and its political institutionalization. After that, it provides a conceptual clarification of the notions of “city” and “urban”, aiming to throw light on the peculiar characteristics of the “mining city”. The work also stresses the importance of the role played by the land issues and by the model and the practices of the urban planning in structuring the “urbs” of the “vilas” of Minas Gerais. Lastly, it examines the process of urban formation and development of the ancient Vila Rica during the seventeenth century. O artigo centra-se na história urbana das vilas estabelecidas em Minas Gerais ao longo do século XVIII. Na primeira parte, analisa brevemente os principais fatores que condicionaram o surgimento na região dos primeiros núcleos populacionais e a sua institucionalização política. A seguir, proporciona um esclarecimento conceitual acerca das noções de “cidade” e “urbano”, visando lançar luzes sobre as características peculiares da “cidade mineradora”. O trabalho destaca também a importância do papel desempenhado pelas questões fundiárias e pelos modelos e pelas práticas urbanísticas na estruturação da urbs mineira. Examina, por último, o processo de formação e de desenvolvimento urbano da antiga Vila Rica durante o século XVIII.
