Título :	Delmiro Gouveia: a construção de um mito

Descripción :	O texto trata dos mitos construídos ao longo deste século em torno do comerciante e industrial Delmiro Gouveia, ao qual foram associadas imagens de empresário modelo- ousado e empreendedor-, de homem que ascendeu socialmente por esforço próprio, de civilizador dos sertões, de indivíduo preocupado com o bem-estar do trabalhador, de mártir da causa nacionalista, de vítima das oligarquias e, mais recentemente, de indivíduo dotado de preocupações com o meio ambiente. O texto procura mostrar como cada um destes mitos foi construído enfatizando alguns episódios da trajetória de Delmiro e omitindo ou desvalorizando outros aspectos – aqueles que não se afinam com a imagem que se pretende construir. Procura mostrar a fragilidade de cada um destes mitos quando confrontados com a trajetória do personagem, ao mesmo tempo em que expõe a força de permanência destas representações pela sua capacidade de servir a causas as mais diversas. This paper considers some of the myths built around the commercial and industrial figure of Delmiro Gouveia, during this century. The various images which have been associated with this model businessman have included the courageous entrepreneur, the self-made man, the civilizing activist in the “Sertão” backlands, the humanitarian individual concerned with the well being of his workers, the martyr for a nationalist cause, the victim of regional oligarchic intrigue of these myths and, more recently, the person concerned with the environment. The text attempts to show how each myth was constructed through an emphasis on certain episodes in the Gouveia’s biography, selectively omitting some, while devaluing others which did not conform to the required profile. The paper attempts to indicate the fragility of these constructions when examined in the light of his extensive career, while attempting to offer some explanation of the permanence of the representations in their capacity to serve many and diverse causes.
