Título :	Crescimento Populacional e Urbanização no Nordeste do Brasil: 1940-1980

Descripción :	O trabalho apresenta a configuração geral do crescimento e da distribuição espacial da população do Nordeste brasileiro e analisa alguns importantes aspectos do seu processo de urbanização. Com base em uma amostra das 56 maiores cidades nordestinas consideradas segundo sub-regiões fisiográficas, é feito uso de análise de variância e da aplicação da chamada rank-size rule para testar as relações existentes entre o crescimento desses núcleos e suas respectivas localizações geográficas, tamanhos e mudanças ocorridas no sistema viário. Dentre as conclusões, destaca-se a de ter havido, nos últimos quarenta anos, mudança substancial no padrão de urbanização do Nordeste: a rede urbana se teria tornado mais estruturada, com hierarquização mais definida dos centros urbanos, maior acessibilidade dos centros menores às suas respectivas hinterlândias maior interiorização do crescimento urbano, etc. The paper shows the overall path of population growth and its territorial distribution in Northeast Brazil and analyses some relevant aspects of the urbanization process. Basing his analysis on a sample of the 56 largest towns of the region, stratified according to the physiographic sub regions, the author studies the variance and the utilization of rank-size rule technique for testing the relation between growth, location, size and changes in the road network. Among the conclusions drawn, he stresses the changes that took place in the past 40 years in the Standards of urbanization in the Northeast, whereby the urban network became structured, the urban hierarchy more defined the Access of the areas to their hinterland easier, higher urban growth in the countryside, and so on.
