A criação da Universidade do Recife é apresentada como forma de modernizar o Recife, centro intermediador entre o núcleo do sudeste e a enorme periferia do Nordeste e do Norte do País. O autor mostra como, desde a sua origem, a Universidade do Recife, hoje Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, convive com duas vertentes ideológicas – a oligarquia e a modernizante – se bem que quase sempre sob a homenagem da primeira. This paper attempts to retrace this history of the Federal Universiy of Pernambuco (UFPE), in the contexto of the more general changes in the social structure of northeast Brazil. The creation of the University of Recife is presented as a way of modernizing Recife, na intermediate Center between the nucleus of southeast Brazil and the huge periphery of the northeast na north of the country. The author shows how, since its foundation, the University of Recife, today the Federal University of Pernambuco, has lived with two ideological tendencies – the oligarchic tendency and the modenizing one – the former, however, amost always predominating.
