| Descripción : | This article discusses the role of the World Bank as an instrument of United States policy. With this objective in mind, I examine the relationship between the changes in strategic direction of this so-called multilateral institution and the war experiences of the Great Power. I try to show that the three great shifts in World Bank thinking, with repercussions on the countries where the Bank acts, are intimately linked with the US defeat in Vietnam, the end of the Cold War and the War on Terror. Este artigo discute o papel do Banco Mundial como instrumento político dos Estados Unidos. Com tal intuito, examino a relação entre as mudanças nas orientações estratégicas desse organismo, dito multilateral, e as experiências guerreiras da grande potência. Procuro demonstrar como as três grandes inflexões no pensamento do Banco Mundial, e que repercutem sobre as nações nas quais atua, estão intimamente vinculadas à derrota dos EUA no Vietnã, ao fim da Guerra Fria e à “Guerra contra o Terror” |
