This article explores possible meanings and uses of the term crisis in the anthropologi cal analysis and other studies that seek to understand cultural dynamics. We propose a restricted use of the term and criticize the abuse of the notion of crisis. A crisis could only happen in a context and to consider the cultural crises we propose an understanding of “context” as a frame and configuration. A cultural crisis destabilizes, to some degree, tensions between homogeneity and heterogeneity relatively instituted in any social space. At the same time, a crisis may threaten the very language of a community.Este artículo explora posibles significados y usos del término crisis en los análisis antropológicos así como en otros estudios que busquen comprender las dinámicas culturales. Propondremos un uso restringido del término y criticaremos el abuso de la noción de crisis. Una crisis sólo podría ocurrir en un contexto y para considerar las crisis culturales explicaremos por qué proponemos entender ese “contexto” como marco y configuración. Una crisis cultural desestabiliza, en algún grado, las tensiones entre homogeneidad y heterogeneidad relativamente instituidas en cualquier espacio social. A la vez, una crisis puede amenazar el lenguaje mismo de una comunidad.
