Observations on the sociolinguistic situation of Huaraz (Ancash, Peru)

dc.description	In recent decades the city of Huaraz has experienced great socio-cultural changes. The presence of mining companies and the tourism have turned it into a commercial city. Many farmers have moved into the city with the aim of looking for work and provide a better education for their children. These internal migrations and the interaction with external actors that have entered into the region have given birth to very complex socio-linguistic realities. A continuum of scenarios among the few monolingual Quechua speakers and the frequent monolingual Spanish speakers, passing through different degrees of lingualism (Aikhenvald 2007: 36), characterizes the city of Huaraz and its province. The present article provides a look at these different socio-linguistic scenarios taking into account the criteria of geographical location, language prestige of Quechua and Spanish as well as pedagogical and gender issues and generational changes. The data of this article are mainly based on my own observations and recordings between 2011 and 2014.	en-US
dc.description	En las últimas décadas la ciudad de Huaraz ha vivido grandes trasformaciones socio-culturales. La presencia de mega empresas mineras así como el turismo la han convertido en una ciudad comercial. Muchos campesinos se han trasladado a la ciudad con la idea de buscar trabajo y ofrecer una mejor educación a sus hijos. Esas migraciones internas y las interacciones con los actores externos que han entrado a la región han dado luz a unas realidades socio-lingüísticas muy complejas. Un continuum de escenarios entre los escasos monolingües en quechua y los frecuentes monolingües en castellano, pasando por diferentes grados de lingualism (lingüismo) (Aikhenvald 2007: 36), caracteriza la ciudad de Huaraz y su provincia. El presente artículo ofrece una mirada a los diferentes escenarios socio-lingüísticos tomando en cuenta los criterios de ubicación geográfica, el prestigio lingüístico del quechua y del castellano así como las cuestiones pedagógicas, de género y de cambios generacionales. Los datos de este artículo se basan principalmente en observaciones propias y grabaciones entre el 2011 y el 2014.	es-ES
