dc.description	In 1697 Noj Peten Island, the capital of the Itza, was conquered by the Spaniards, thus completing the conquest of the Peten and marking the end of the last great independent Maya group. This conquest had been achieved by one of the biggest undertakings in the early colonial Yucatan Peninsula: the opening of the Camino Real between Campeche and Guatemala. This route completely changed the history of the region: it initiated profound changes in Spanish colonial organization as well as in the life of remote Maya villages. Through an analysis of colonial documents several observations on the history of the Camino Real are presented, concerning not only the history of the opening of the same, but also incidents in the surrounding area. We present the case of the mulatto Juan Thomas, who was taken prisoner at the Presidio of El Petén and days later, was killed by the independent Maya. This incident provides us with information relevant to the understanding not only of the history of the region, but also of the organization and practices of the Maya and of the problems that the Spanish conquerors fought unsuccessfully.	en-US
dc.description	En 1697 se llevó a cabo la toma de la isla de Noj Petén, capital de los itzá. Con este hecho se dio por conquistado El Petén y con ello la caída del último de los grandes grupos independientes. Para llevar a cabo dicho acto se realizó una de las tareas más grandes: la apertura del Camino Real entre Campeche y Guatemala. Este camino cambió por completo la historia del territorio, con él comenzaron procesos que sobrepasaron la organización española y, a su vez, la organización de los pueblos de la montaña tomó nuevos rumbos. A través del análisis de documentos coloniales se presentan diversas observaciones acerca de la historia de dicho camino, es decir, no sólo la historia de la apertura del mismo, sino también de aquello que aconteció en sus alrededores. En este artículo presentamos el caso del mulato Juan Thomas, quien fue llevado preso al Presidio de El Petén y días después fue muerto por los mayas independientes. Este hecho deja a la vista información relevante para el entendimiento no sólo de la historia de la región, sino también de la organización y prácticas de los mayas de las montañas así como de los problemas a los que los españoles se enfrentaron sin éxito.	es-ES
