El territorio del Camagüey representa una amplia zona minera con variedad de recursos. El presente artículo es una aproximación a la historia del conocimiento de la naturaleza geológica del territorio durante los primeros trecientos años de la ciudad, comenzando desde los primeros tiempos de su fundación. La explotación del oro fue la principal fuente de ocupación en los placeres y bancos de los arroyos cercanos a la villa. Otros minerales metálicos fueron el centro de la atención exploratoria a partir del siglo xvii por las necesidades de la industria bélica de la metrópoli. Los primeros estudios geológicos de la Isla en el marco de la expedición de la Comisión de Guantánamo arrojan la presencia de oro, cobre, hierro y petróleo en Camagüey.The territory of Camagüey represents a large mining region with a variety of resources. This article is an approach to the history of knowledge of the geological nature of the territory during the first three hundred years, starting from the founding of the city. The exploitation of gold was the main source of occupation in the sand mounds and banks of the creeks near the town. Other metallic minerals were the center of exploratory attention from the 17th century onwards due to the needs of the metropolis's war industry. The first geological studies of the island within the framework of the Guantanamo Commission expedition show the presence of gold, copper, iron and oil on Camagüey.
