: El artículo presenta al pintor inglés Walter Goodman, quien residiera en Santiago de Cuba entre 1864 y 1868 y publicara, en 1873, La Perla de las Antillas o Un artista en Cuba. Este singular testimonio constituye una fuente de gran valor para la reconstrucción histórica de la sociedad colonial, lo cual se demuestra a través del recorrido por temas tan diversos como la espiritualidad santiaguera, la esclavitud y el problema racial, o el estado de las artes en la ciudad.  The article presents the English painter Walter Goodman, who lived in Santiago de Cuba between 1864 and 1868 and published, in 1873, The Pearl of the Antilles or An Artist in Cuba. This unique testimony constitutes a source of great value for the historical reconstruction of colonial society, which is demonstrated through the exploration of topics as diverse as Santiago's spirituality, slavery and the racial problem, or the state of the arts in the city.
