This article centers on demonstrating that a type of democracy in Latin America, due to particular sociopolitical contexts of the region, is constituted by populism. In that sense, the author debates with the concept of democracy arising from the Latin-American experience, to later bring light over the political construction of the concept of “citizens”, as well as the elements that compose it, to finally, argue about the academic and political miscomprehension that the populist phenomenon has had, as well as its supposed incompatibility with democracy.El artículo se centra en mostrar que un tipo de democracia en América Latina, debido a contextos sociopolíticos particulares de la región, está constituida por el populismo. En ese sentido, el autor discute el concepto de democracia a partir de la experiencia de América Latina, para luego prestar atención a la construcción política del concepto pueblo, así como los elementos que la componen, y finalmente argumentar la incomprensión académica y política que hasta el momento ha tenido el fenómeno populista y su supuesta incompatibilidad con la democracia.
