Este trabalho objetiva compreender as transformações ocorridas com relação à concepção de patrimônio histórico-cultural e a construção do conceito de cultura imaterial, discutindo a sua relevância, os questionamentos relativos à sua pertinência e legitimidade enquanto nova categoria a compor as agendas das políticas públicas na área da cultura. In the course of the first half of the XX century the concept of historical and artistic patrimony and the idea that it represented a “cultural good” to be preserved took strong hold in the Western world as a referral linked to tangible goods, the so-called “rock and lime”, only starting to be questioned in a much ampler manner after the Second World War. This paper aims at understanding the transformations that occurred in relation to the concept of historical/cultural patrimony and the building up of the concept of non-material patrimony, debating its relevance, the questionings relative to its pertinence and legitimacy as a new category in making up the agendas of public policies in the field of culture.
