This paper discusses some strategies developed in Australia to promote indigenous arts, including awards, codes of conduct for museums and traders, and support from the federal government to indigenous cooperatives. The Australian case is probably unique in the world in terms of the visibility, institutionalization and value that Aboriginal artists have achieved. In this sense, it offers an interesting contrast to reflect on the Latin American context. It also raises issues of ethical and political nature, in the case of a country with such a violent colonial past.O presente texto aborda as estratégias de fomento às artes indígenas desenvolvidas na Austrália, que incluem premiações, um código de conduta comercial, apoio do governo federal às cooperativas indígenas, entre outras medidas. O caso australiano é único no mundo, em termos do grau de institucionalização, visibilidade e valorização que os artistas aborígenes atingiram. Nesse sentido, oferece um contraste interessante para se refletir sobre o contexto latino-americano. Também suscita questões de cunho ético e político, em se tratando de um país com passado colonial tão violento.
