This article aims to generate data to establish a proposal for a cross-border integration region among f ive countries that share territorial and maritime borders in the c aribbean: c olombia (san a ndrés, Providencia and s anta c atalina), Panama, c osta r ica, n icaragua, and j amai - ca. a characterization of the border area was compiled by examining common geohistorical processes, settlement dynamics, and the ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious elements that consolidated the cultural unity of this c aribbean region. a s a result of this characteriza - tion, a cross-border community was identif ied that, despite the divisions established by the f ive countries, justif ies regional integration.
