dc.description This research examines the role of intellectuals in the Spanish-speaking Antilles: Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, in the contemporary period. Using Edward SaidÕs seminal work Representaciones del intelectual (1996) as a starting point, this paper discusses the relationships between Cuban, Dominican and Puerto Rican intellectuals with the spheres of power, in their role as discursive mediators between society and the State, and also in the development of public debates. In this respect, the article proposes that in each of these countries a different model operates, with regard to the role the intellectuals play in their society. Each of these three models implies a particular relationship of the intellectual with power, and specific forms of public action (or lack of it).
