| dc.description | This article presents the results of a research project based on an ethnographical approach, aimed at analyzing the hostile manifestations towards migrants on a street in downtown Antofagasta, and interprets these as a process of local racialization. Since the on-going arrival of migrants from the Caribbean and countries in the northern part of South America (Dominicans, Colombians, Peruvians, Bolivians,) and their increased visibility on downtown streets, practices and discourses have developed that identify these people as malevolent subjects that have made the downtown area “go bad.” Focusing the analysis on State institutions and engaging Marxist, anti-racist, critical race theory and black feminist perspectives, I posit that the "undesirable immigrant" emerges as a fetish and is converted into a commodity and an artifact exploited by some political sectors and the State itself to justify their existence and reinforce immigration policies. Practices such as the racial fencing of downtown Antofagasta are used to explain the rejection of immigrants as a tabula rasa, the symbolic and material conservation of national hegemony and performances of national order. Antofagasta's downtown area and Condell Street have become the backdrop for a process of racialization based on the fantasy of insecurity. | en-US |
| dc.description | En este artículo se exponen resultados de un estudio basado en el método etnográfico, el cual se centró en analizar las diversas manifestaciones de la “hostilidad nacional” en una calle céntrica de Antofagasta. Según el autor, tales expresiones formarían parte de un proceso de racialización local. Desde el arribo sostenido de personas provenientes de zonas caribeñas y del norte de Sudamérica hacia Antofagasta, y su manifiesta visibilidad en las calles céntricas, se han levantado prácticas contra estos inmigrantes, las que han alimentado discursos que los señalan como elementos nocivos que han vuelto “malo” el centro de la ciudad. Focalizando el análisis en las instituciones del Estado, y desde perspectivas marxistas, antirracistas, y feministas, en el texto se argumenta que el fetiche del inmigrante indeseable se convierte en una utilidad y un artefacto al que recurren sectores políticos y el mismo Estado para justificar su existencia. A través de prácticas como el cercado del centro de Antofagasta, las explicaciones sobre el rechazo a personas inmigrantes, la conservación simbólico-material de la hegemonía nacional y las performances del orden nacional, el centro de Antofagasta y Calle Condell son el escenario cotidiano de un proceso de racialización basado en la fantasía de la inseguridad. | es-ES |
