Activities related to mining generate a great deal of changesin the structure and dynamic of the landscape and, as such,they are liable to the process of environmental permissionand the recovering of degraded areas. The legislation thatdeals with the matter demands a Plan of Recovery of theDegraded Areas. But the point in question is what is reallybeing recovered. To achieve this, the possibility of recoveringthe environment in areas degraded due to the extraction ofsand was analyzed. The area of study is the Parque EcológicoCosta and its surroundings, which is located on the rightbank of Rio Iguaçu, borough of Umbará, in the South regionof Curitiba, State of Paraná. A chronological study was madeof the area in order to specify the original landscape, andafterwards to verify changes occurred in the use andoccupation of the land during the last 50 years. It wasconcluded that there had not been an environmental recoverybut an “environmental transformation”, that is, landscaperehabilitation that has different structure, dynamic andpossibilities of use by the community from that of the originalone and the landscape of the 50’s.RESUMOAs atividades relacionadas à mineração são causadoras deenormes alterações na estrutura e na dinâmica da paisageme, como tal, estão sujeitas ao processo de licenciamentoambiental e à recuperação das áreas degradadas. A legislaçãoque trata da questão exige um Plano de Recuperação deÁreas Degradadas (Prads), desta forma, a questão que secoloca é o que realmente é recuperado. Para tanto, analisousea ocorrência de uma possível recuperação ambiental emárea degradada pela extração de areia. A área de estudo compreendeo Parque Ecológico Costa e seus arredores, sito namargem direita do Alto Rio Iguaçu, no bairro do Umbará, partesul do município de Curitiba-PR. Foi feito um estudo temporalda área para levantar a paisagem original e, posteriormente,verificar as modificações ocorridas no uso e ocupaçãodo solo nos últimos 50 anos. Concluiu-se que não houverecuperação ambiental, mas uma “transformação ambiental”,ou seja, uma reabilitação da paisagem que apresenta estrutura,dinâmica e possibilidades de uso pela comunidade, diferentesdaquela original e da paisagem dos anos 1950.
