| dc.description | This paper analyzes the evolution of the concept of cruelty through the work of Antonin Artaud. The metaphysical vision of life dominated by the cosmic cruelty, at the time of the Theatre and its Double (1938), is reversed with the experience of madness. The theatre becomes a weapon of war against the alienating forces of the body and mind. The idea of a liberating cruelty perpetrated against the system of representation that dominates our society of the spectacle is the essential legacy made by Artaud to the dramatists and contemporary artists. | dc.description | Este artigo analisa a evolução da noção de crueldade através do conjunto da obra de Antonin Artaud (1895-1948). A visão metafísica de uma vida dominada pela crueldade cósmica, na época de O teatro e seu duplo (1938), inverte-se com a experiência da loucura. O teatro torna-se então uma arma de guerra contra as forças alienantes do corpo e do espírito. A idéia de uma crueldade libertadora que se exerce contra o sistema da representação que domina nossa sociedade do espetáculo, tal é a essência do legado de Artaud aos dramaturgos e aos artistas contemporâneos.
