| dc.description | Death occupied a prominent spot in colonial Lima. Day-to-day violence, the precariousness of life and the constant preachings about the day of judgement were ever-present and contributed to this state of affairs. The proximity of death, whether it be inexorable, or the possibility of being the victim of a sudden death, led people to try to prepare themselves properly for a “good death”, absolutely vital if one wanted to ensure eternal salvation. This would take the form of elaborate ritualism in the funerary rites. In addition, there was an appeal for solidarity between the living and the dead. The deceased would continue to play a role in society, while the living with their prayers could help relieve the tormented of their dear departed. In this way, the line between life and death was not clearly defined. | en-US |
| dc.description | La muerte ocupó un lugar central en la Lima colonial. La violencia cotidiana y la precariedad de la vida puestas de manifiesto a cada momento, junto a la permanente prédica en torno a las postrimerías del hombre, contribuyeron a ello. La “familiaridad” con la muerte, propia de la “muerte amaestrada”, y la posibilidad de ser víctima de una muerte súbita, llevó a la búsqueda de la adecuada preparación para conseguir una “buena muerte”, indispensable si se quería alcanzar la gloria eterna. Ello devino en un acusado formulismo en el ritual funerario. Igualmente, se apeló a la solidaridad entre vivos y muertos. Los difuntos seguían actuando en la sociedad, y los vivos, con sus oraciones podrían contribuir a aminorar el sufrimiento de sus seres queridos. Así, la frontera entre la vida y la muerte, no fue clara. | es-ES |
