This article analyses how the peasant has been seen by the Social Science. On the one hand the peasant was destined to disappear by virtue of Marxist theory because, with the development of capitalism, this s ocial type has become proletarians. On the other hand the contemporary approac hes of Sociology visualize the presence of peasantry in the agriculture of dev eloped capitalist societies. Then the comprehension of the place of the peasant in the society ends up being an exercise of theoretical/methodological reflectio n of Sociology.Este artigo analisa os olhares da ciência social sobre o camponês. Por um lado, o camponês foi destinado ao desaparecimento pela teoria marxista porque, com o desenvolvimento do capitalismo, esse tipo social se tornaria um proletário. Por outro lado, as abordagens contemporâneas da sociologia visualizam a presença do campesinato na agricultura das sociedades capitalistas desenvolvidas. Dessa forma, a compreensão do lugar do camponês na sociedade acaba sendo um exercício de reflexão teórico/metodológica da sociologia.
