Romani groups in Colombia have debated on the popular representations of their lives even before they were officially recognized as a distinct ethnic group. Colombian Romani civil society organizations have taken it upon themselves since their inception to instigate dialogue about the negative stereotypes with which they coexist in daily life. This article sustains that the negotiations with the state which established Romani People as an ethnic minority in 1997 marked a shift in the strategies through which Romani families have adapted to the Colombian context, including their public image.Grounded in the concepts of representation, stereotypification and performativity, the text sustains a critical perspective on the division between “gypsyness” and “non-gypsyness” that is part of the Romani experience. The argument is based on theauthor’s fieldwork in Bogota and other Colombian cities from 2006 until the present. Ethnographic description is brought to the text through empirical moments, vignettes that demonstrate the co-construction of divisions between “us” and “them” through the constant (re)production and transformation of stereotypes about “gypsyness”. The article seeks to initiate a conversation that goes beyond creation of stereotypes of Romani families in Latin America by critically examining the contextual relevance of narratives.Los grupos romaníes en Colombia han reflexionado sobre la representación popular de sus vidas incluso antes de ser reconocidos como un grupo étnico oficial. Las organizaciones romaníes colombianas desde sus inicios han provocado un diálogo sobre los estereotipos negativos con los que conviven en su vida cotidiana. El presente artículo muestra cómo el inicio de sus negociaciones con el Estado en 1997 también marca un cambio en las estrategias que las familias romaníes han utilizado para adaptarse a la vida en el contexto colombiano, incluida su imagen pública. Los conceptos de representación, estereotipia y performatividad permiten argumentar una visión crítica de la división binaria entre “lo gitano” y lo “no-gitano”, como parte de la experiencia romaní. El argumento se sustenta en el trabajo de campo del autor en Bogotá y otras ciudades colombianas desde el año 2006 hasta el presente. La descripción etnográfica se materializa en momentos empíricos, viñetas que muestran la negociación entre múltiples actores sociales del significado de la división entre “nosotros” y “los otros”, a través de la constante (re)producción y transformación de dichos estereotipos sobre “lo gitano”. El artículo busca iniciar unaconversación que vaya más allá de la estereotipia en el trabajo con familias romaníes en América Latina, examinando la importancia contextual de estas narrativas.
