The following work analyzes the Tenth Pan American Congress of Physical Education held in La Habana, Cuba in 1986. From an approach that draws on social and cultural history, we think of the international event —the first of its kind in Cuba— as a place that allows the identification of shared conceptual categories, agents and social actors, problematizations and points of dissonance and dispute about movement education. Among the conclusions analyzed, the achievement of some disciplinary agreements and, above all, the tensions and political pedagogical differences on how to conceptualize the purposes, responsibilities and functions of physical education and sports in the Latin American social world stand out.
