Over the past thirty years there has been increasing interest in the memory of slavery and ways of expressing the past, including places of memory, museums, and cultural heritage. By accessing slavery’s past, groups and individuals build their own narratives about it and break with places that, historically, have erased, even silenced and marginalized Africa and the Black diaspora. Given this demand for recognizing the legacy of the memory of slavery, this paper raises questions about the Cais do Valongo archeological site, [which came to be recognized] as cultural heritage of humanity, as a result of the agency of Black social actorsin the Pequena África district. It also examines the political uses of the past by these contemporary actors in the struggle for identification, recognition, and reparation, as well as in the fight against racism.Pode-se observar que, nos últimos trinta anos, o interesse pelas memórias da escravidão e as expressões do passado, como os lugares de memória, os museus e o patrimônio cultural, intensificou-se. Ao acessar o passado da escravidão, grupos e indivíduos constroem narrativas próprias sobre esse passado e rompem com espaços que, historicamente, produzem um apagamento, quando não um silenciamento e uma marginalização da África e das populações negras em diáspora. Assim, diante desse quadro de reivindicação recente por reconhecimento e patrimonialização das memórias da escravidão, este texto se propõe a interpelar um bem cultural e patrimônio da humanidade, o Sítio Arqueológico Cais do Valongo, a partir das agências de atores sociais negros da região da Pequena África, e os usos políticos do passado por esses atores contemporâneos na luta por identificação, reconhecimento e reparação, bem como na luta contra o racismo.
