dc.description	Colonial images of Africa include a strange set of photos depicting “sick bodies”. Photography was an efficient visual resource in constructing anideological justification of the “civilizing mission” of a self-proclaimed “altruistic” and “scientific” colonialism. By analyzing photographs of Africans suffering from Hansen’s disease in the first half of the twentieth century, we unravel the relationship between this “leprous Africa” and the coalescing interests of missionaries, physicians, and colonial authorities. Based on images from international archives, this study approaches the visual derogatory representation of African alterity, to which photography lent its “objectivity” and contributed to the spectacularization of the suffering of others.	en-US
dc.description	Na iconografia colonial sobre a África, há um conjunto heteróclito de fotografias sobre “corpos enfermos”. A fotografia foi um recurso visual eficiente para justificar ideologicamente a “missão civilizatória” de um colonialismo autoproclamado “altruísta” e “científico”. A análise de fotografias sobre a hanseníase no continente africano na primeira metade do século XX permite deslindar a relação entre a construção imagética de uma “África leprosa” e a coalescência de interesses de missionários, médicos e demais autoridades coloniais. Com base em imagens de arquivos estrangeiros, o estudo aborda a visualidade de uma representação negativa da alteridade africana, para a qual a fotografia emprestou sua “objetividade” e concorreu para a espetacularização do sofrimento dos outros.	pt-BR
