The article aims to analyze interpretative parameters used by Brazilian jurisprudence in conceptualizing the environment. Judgments of the Superior Court of Justice and the Federal Regional Courts were analyzed, supported by Edgar Morin's complex thinking and Niklas Luhmann's Theory of Social Systems. In summary, it was found that the analyzed jurisprudence carries out a reducionist interpretation of the environment, moving away from a multicriterial interpretation capable of dealing with environmental complexity.O artigo tem como objetivo analisar parâmetros interpretativos utilizados pela jurisprudência brasileira na conceituação de meio ambiente. Foram analisados Acórdãos do Superior Tribunal de Justiça e dos Tribunais Regionais Federais, com apoio no pensamento complexo de Edgar Morin e na Teoria de Sistemas Sociais de Niklas Luhmann. Em síntese, verificou-se que a jurisprudência analisada realiza uma interpretação reducionista de meio ambiente, afastando-se de uma interpretação multicriterial capaz de lidar com a complexidade ambiental.
