The article discusses the most significant elements of knowledge production around Algerian rural society, by conducting an evaluation of the teaching of social sciences and sociology within the Algerian University. The teaching of sociology shows a strong relationship between the University, the political power and the society, where a notable tendency towards the "popularization" of social sciences indicates profound changes in the status of these sciences and, in general, in the place of knowledge in society as well as in the way rural society is studied in Algeria.O artigo aborda os elementos mais significativos da produção de conhecimento em torno da sociedade rural argelina, realizando uma avaliação do ensino das ciências sociais e da sociologia nas universidades argelinas. Os resultados da análise apontam para uma forte relação entre a universidade, o poder político e a sociedade no ensino da sociologia, havendo ainda uma notável tendência à “popularização” das ciências sociais. Esse processo de popularização do conhecimento indica profundas mudanças no status dessas ciências e, em geral, no lugar do conhecimento na sociedade, bem como na forma como a sociedade rural é estudada na Argélia.
