The year 2020 began immersed in a collective tragedy still ongoing: the pandemic for the new coronavírus. What are the influencies of the pandemic and social isolation on the social sciences and what is the role of the área in this contexto? These are the questions that guide the discussions developed in this essay, which are divided into three moments. First, I reaffirm and discuss the importante contribution of the social sciences to understanding and confronting the effects of the pandemic based on their established knowledge. Second, I face some of the challenges immediately imposed on sociological and anthropological practices due to social isolation and the tragedy we are experiencing. Third, I point to some future tasks inherited by the area.O ano de 2020 iniciou imerso em uma tragédia coletiva ainda em curso: a pandemia pelo novo coronavírus. Quais as influências da pandemia e do isolamento social sobre as ciências sociais e qual o papel da área neste contexto? São estas as perguntas que orientam as discussões desenvolvidas neste ensaio, que estão divididas em três momentos. Primeiro, reafirmo e discorro sobre a importante contribuição das ciências sociais para a compreensão e o enfrentamento dos efeitos da pandemia com base em seu conhecimento já sedimentado. Segundo, enfrento alguns desafios imediatamente impostos ao fazer sociológico e antropológico pelo isolamento social e a tragédia que vivenciamos. Terceiro, aponto para algumas tarefas futuras herdadas pela área.
