dc.description	This essay aims to show how the narrative structure of Virginia Woolf’s To the lighthouse mirrors aspects of its character Mrs. Ramsay, considering the metaphor of “the sponge of human emotions” (WOOLF, 1992) as an image both for Mrs. Ramsay’s narrative function in the novel and her social function as wife and mother. The starting point for this discussion is a comparative approach to the structure of Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, in which multiple narratives form concentric circles (LECERCLE, 1997) mirroring the maternity metaphors analyzed in the novel by feminist critics. Aspects such as the indistinction between markers of narrative voice in Frankenstein (NEWMAN, 1986) may be related to the dissolution of an objective narrative voice in Woolf’s work (AUERBACH, 1971), suggesting similarities between these authors who, separated in history by the nineteenth century realism, become key components in the development of the modern novel. The discussions surrounding the issues of women and Literature are not limited in Virginia Woolf’s work, as it has been established regarding Shelley’s, to female representation, but permeate the texts in stylistic and formal aspects.	en-US
dc.description	Este trabalho almeja demonstrar como a estrutura narrativa do romance To the lighthouse, de Virginia Woolf, espelha aspectos da sua personagem Mrs. Ramsay, tomando a metáfora da “esponja de emoções humanas” (WOOLF, 1992) como figura que resume a função narrativa de Mrs. Ramsay no romance, assim como sua função social de esposa e mãe. Parte-se, para tanto, de uma aproximação comparativa com a estrutura de Frankenstein, de Mary Shelley, cujas múltiplas narrativas formam círculos concêntricos (LECERCLE, 1997), espelhando as metáforas da maternidade analisadas na obra pela crítica literária feminista. Procedimentos como a indistinção entre marcadores de voz em Frankenstein (NEWMAN, 1986) podem ser relacionados, por exemplo, com a dissolução de uma voz narrativa objetiva na obra de Woolf (AUERBACH, 1971), sugerindo pontos de contato entre as autoras que, historicamente separadas justamente pelo realismo do século XIX, se tornam figuras-chave no desenvolvimento do romance moderno. As discussões a respeito da mulher e da literatura não estão limitadas, na obra de Woolf, assim como se observava a respeito de Shelley, apenas à representação feminina, mas permeiam o texto em níveis formais e estilísticos.	pt-BR
