dc.description	En 1993 el Estado chileno reconoció la preexistencia en el suelo nacional de diversos grupos étnicos y propuso implementar políticas especializadas; desde entonces los atacameños de la región de Antofagasta iniciaron un proceso de organización que los coloca actualmente como actores de importancia en las discusiones sobre la administración del territorio y sus recursos. La combinación entre elementos del saber experto -o científico- y el saber tradicional -o étnico- ocupa un papel fundamental en las estrategias desarrolladas. En este artículo presentaré un estudio de caso: el uso de la figura de Tomás Paniri, líder indígena del siglo XVIII. Distinguiré tres momentos: el primero, su construcción como sujeto histórico a través de descubrimientos documentales (1970-ad.); el segundo, su transformación en símbolo del movimiento atacameño (1990-ad.); y el tercero, su incorporación a las narrativas estatales de lo multicultural. El análisis me permitirá mostrar diferentes tipos de articulación entre atacameños, campo académico y Estado y, al mismo tiempo, esbozar las tensiones discursivas en las que se inscribe la categoría de lo atacameño.	es-ES
dc.description	In 1993, the Chilean State recognized the preexistence of diverse ethnic groups in the national territory and suggested specialized policies, since then the Atacameños from Antofagasta Region initiated an organization process which places them, nowadays, as significant actors in the discussions about the administration of the territory and their resources. The combination between elements of the expert -or scientific- knowledge and the traditional -or ethnic- knowledge has an important role in the strategies developed. This article presents a case study: the use of the figure of Tomás Paniri, an indigenous leader of the 18th century. Throughout the paper three moments are distinguished: first, his creation as historical individual through the documentary discoveries (1970-ad); second, his transformation as symbol of the Atacameño movement (1990-ad) and third, his incorporation to the state narratives of the multicultural. The objective is to show the different types of articulation between the Atacameños, the academic field and the State and also the underlying tensions in which the category of the Atacameño is inscribed.	en-US
