Northern Chile’s port cities experienced bubonic plague epidemics in the early 20th century. The first was in Iquique in 1903. Then, the plague reached Antofagasta in 1904 and devastated Pisagua in 1905. That same year, Chile established a health checkpoint to screen ships entering the country at its northern border with Peru in Arica. Although outbreaks were quelled at times through the lazarettos (isolation hospitals) built to fight the disease and urban prophylactic measures, resurgences of varying intensities continued through the 1920s. The succession of epidemics and the information derived from the urgency of controlling them make it possible to understand and evaluate whether the architectural and urban prevention measures were adequate to control the disease and to identify the impact of these operations.En los primeros años del siglo XX, las ciudades puerto del norte de Chile fueron afectadas por epidemias de peste bubónica. En 1903 la primera fue en Iquique, luego en 1904 la enfermedad llegó a Antofagasta, y en 1905 la plaga arrasó con Pisagua. Para el control de los barcos que ingresaban a Chile, en Arica, en la frontera norte con Perú, en 1905, fue creada una Estación Sanitaria. Para la peste se levantaron lazaretos (hospitales de aislamiento) y se tomaron medidas profilácticas urbanas que en momentos apaciguaban la enfermedad, aunque la peste volvió a aparecer con distintas intensidades hasta la década del 20. La secuencia de emergencias, y la información derivada de la urgencia por controlarlas, permiten comprender y evaluar si las arquitecturas y las medidas urbanas fueron las adecuadas para controlar la enfermedad, y cuál fue la repercusión de estas operaciones.
