| dc.description | A totora reed raft has roamed Chilean archaeology since 1967. Biography over biography, from the original piece a new object was created, now virtual and different from its predecessor. The supposed miniature raft was consolidated over time as irrefutable evidence of the age of these vessels and of pre-Hispanic navigation in northern Chile and even in the Andes. The recent study of the object deposited at the Musée d'Ethnographie de Genève in Switzerland reveals that instead of a raft it is a bundle of plant fibers, a kind of artefact common in the funerary contexts of the Formative period in northern Chile, described as paintbrushes, brushes, combs or packs of raw materials. The initial confusion of the Jean-Christian Spahni and the reproduction of his later biographers serves as an input to discuss how archaeological evidence is constructed and how accounts are written in prehistory. | en-US |

Biografía tras biografía, a partir de la pieza original se creó un nuevo objeto, ahora virtual y diferente a su antecesor. La supuesta nave en miniatura se consolidó como una prueba irrefutable de la antigüedad de estas embarcaciones y de la navegación prehispánica en el norte de Chile y los Andes. El reciente estudio del objeto depositado en el Musée d’ethnographie de Genève en Suiza revela que más que una balsa corresponde a un atado de fibras vegetales, una variedad de artefacto habitual en los contextos funerarios del Período Formativo del norte de Chile, descritos como brochas, escobillas, peines o paquetes de materia prima. La confusión inicial de Jean-Christian Spahni y las reproducciones de sus biógrafos/as posteriores sirven de insumo para discutir cómo se construye la evidencia arqueológica y de qué manera se narra el relato en la prehistoria. | es-ES |
