With the extramural expansion of Cartagena de Indias, extramural neighborhoods were consolidated in the proximity of the system of fortifications and in its periphery, as is the case of the village of La Boquilla in the northern part of the city. This physical space has been characterized as a settlement of black people who have lived there traditionally and collectively. Later in the 20th century, the city experienced a process of modernization anchored to a tourist profile at the national and international level, projecting both urban and tourist development towards La Boquilla, which led to the arrival of agents: tourism, hotel and real estate, which produced on the physical space and the population an ethnic/racial touristification, encouraged ethnic/racial segregation, produced economic and social pressure, and symbolic violence on the black population. Despite the segregation and ethnic/racial tourism, the black population has resisted, fought and remained in the space, both through legal means and by promoting community tourism and ecotourism.
