The study of the functional diversity of tree species in two contrasting states of succession in a
tropical dry forest in Cundinamarca, is based on the analysis of leaf traits and wood traits. The
different parts of the plant are subject to various hydraulic, architectural and environmental
forces; therefore, we expect differences in the values of the wood features measured in
different plant structures. Understanding the possible variations of the functional features is
important to explore the life history or ecological strategies of the plants, theme developed in
article 1 of the present study. Likewise, we sought to know if this behavior changes when we
carry out the evaluation at the community level, from the study of the functional strategies
measured in branches, trunk and leaves in species of greater ecological importance in two
successional contrasting stages, where the species develop different strategies of the use of
resources, a subject addressed in article 2.
We find out great intraindividual variability of anatomical features contrasting ontogenetic,
hydraulic, architectural and environmental forces, differences that are maintained between the
successional stages. These results are important in ecological terms because the functional
strategies vary according to the structure in which the functional features are estimated, and
therefore their capacity to respond to changing environmental conditions. These analyzes avoid
underestimating the calculations of carbon stocks with traditional procedures. We find out that
species of early succession develop conservative water strategies due to the restrictions
imposed by the drought.
