Shifting cultivation is a farming system commonly found in the tropics around the world, in the Colombian Amazon is the model of agricultural production more widespread among indigenous communities. Population growth, the expansion of the agricultural frontier and other activities, have generated a strong pressure on communities and territories in which shifting cultivation is practiced, which is why it is important to determine the implications that these factors may have over the territory. This study characterizes and evaluates the future viability of shifting cultivation systems of the Camaritagua Resguardo in the Colombian Amazon, it was performed an optimization model to simulate the future dynamics of the system and recreated a number of scenarios assumptions in order to visualize the system under different social and landscape features. It was found that the area suitable for agriculture is lower than the found in other studies and occupies 3.6% of the total length of the Resguardo, besides, from the modeling it was recognized process and was listed the implications of these for future sustainability of shifting cultivation systems in the Amazon.
